Our Rebranding Decision
When I completed Bonnie Christine’s Immersion course in 2021 and subsequently started my business, I initially chose to use my name as my business name, which worked well for a while. But as my interests expanded and my design services evolved, it became clear that my name alone wasn’t capturing the fun and creative energy of the design agency I was building. I wanted something catchy, playful and reflective of my beautiful surroundings in Cornwall, a stunning peninsula in the far southwest of England.
That’s when the name Seaweed & Spruce was conceived! In a whimsical way, it perfectly captured the coastal and land vibes of my environment while adding a zany, quirky touch that felt just right for my studio. Once I had the name, everything else started to fall into place. I designed a new website using WordPress, aiming for a clean and professional look that would spotlight our body of work effectively. Like any creative journey, the website – and the rebranding as a whole – will continue to evolve but I’m excited about where Seaweed & Spruce is heading!
1. Know Why You’re Rebranding
- Take a Look at Your Current Brand: Before you dive into the rebrand, think about why you’re doing it. Is your brand feeling outdated? Are you trying to reach a new audience? Maybe your business has evolved and your brand needs to catch up. Being clear about why you’re rebranding will help guide everything else.
- Set Your Goals: What do you want to achieve with this rebrand? Are you hoping to attract new customers, freshen up your look or communicate a new message? Knowing your goals will help you stay focused.
Tip:
Ask your customers what they think! Their feedback can give you great insights into what’s working and what could use a refresh.
2. Do Your Rebranding Homework
- Check Out the Competition: Take a look at what other businesses like yours are doing. What do you like about their brands? What do you think you could do better? This research will help you find ways to stand out.
- Define Your New Brand: Now, picture your new brand. What’s the vibe? What do you want people to feel when they see it? Think about your brand’s personality, values and how it should look and sound.
Tip:
If you’re feeling stuck, working with a branding expert can help. They can give you fresh ideas and guide you in the right direction. Check out our Portfolio here.
3. Get Your Team on Board (or family and friends!)
- Keep Everyone in the Loop: Your team is a big part of your business, so make sure they know what’s happening. Explain why you’re rebranding and what it means for them.
- Ask for Input: Your employees have valuable insights, especially when it comes to customers. Encourage them to share their ideas and thoughts about the rebrand.
- No Team Yet?: Get your family and friends involved. Prepare a list of questions about your business, website, products, services etc. Ask what they think your business’s weak areas are. Refer back to the first question above Know Why You’re Rebranding and compose a few questions around that question.
Tip:
Hold a fun brainstorming session to get everyone involved. The more your team feels part of the process, the smoother the rebrand will go.
4. Plan, Plan, Plan
- Make a Timeline: Rebranding takes time, so plan it out step by step. From designing a new logo to updating your website, set clear deadlines for each part of the process.
- Budget Wisely: Rebranding can cost more than you think, so make sure you plan your budget carefully; include everything from design work to marketing and leave a little extra for any surprises. However, that said it’s possible to create your new branding elements yourself, for FREE! Sign up for a free Canva account and begin designing!
Tip:
Break the rebrand into smaller tasks to keep things manageable. This also makes it easier to track your progress.
5. Create Your New Look – Rebranding 101
- Design New Brand Elements: This is the fun part! Create your new logo, update your website and refresh any customer-facing materials. Everything should reflect your new brand’s look and feel. Read blogs and watch videos on how to use Canva, learn about colour, typography and images. Create a mood board in Pinterest or Canva, everytime you see a style or font you like, add it to your board. You’ll be a pro in no time!
- Make Guidelines: Once you have your new brand, make a simple guide on how to use it. This ensures your brand looks consistent everywhere, from your business cards to your website to your social media. 6. Roll Out the Rebrand Gradually
- Test the Waters: Before going full steam ahead, consider a soft launch of your rebrand. Share it with a small group of loyal customers first to get feedback and make any tweaks.
- Update Your Online Presence: Start updating your website, social media profiles and any other online platforms with your new branding. Make sure everything matches and flows well.
Tip:
Try to update your online presence during quieter times, like late at night or on weekends, to avoid any disruptions.
7. Tell Your Audience What’s Happening
- Make an Announcement: Once everything is ready, it’s time to announce your rebrand to the world! Share the news with your customers and explain why you made the changes.
- Be Honest: People appreciate honesty. Let your customers know what inspired the rebrand and reassure them that while things may look different, your core values remain the same.
Tip:
Use all your communication channels—social media, email, your website—to spread the word and keep your messaging consistent.
8. Manage Customer Expectations
- Keep It Simple: If your rebrand involves changes that affect your customers, like new packaging or login details, make sure to explain things clearly and simply.
- Be Ready to Help: Make sure your customer service team is prepared to answer any questions or concerns about the rebrand. They should know all the details to help customers smoothly transition.
Tip:
Consider rewarding your customers for sticking with you during the rebrand with a special offer or discount.
9. Monitor the Changes
- Keep an Eye on Things: After you launch your rebrand, watch how it’s performing. Are people engaging with your new look? How are sales or website visits? Keep track of what’s working and what might need adjusting.
- Gather Feedback: Continue to ask your customers what they think about the rebrand. Their feedback can help you make improvements if needed.
Tip:
Use tools like social media polls or surveys to gather feedback. People love to share their opinions, so make it easy for them!
10. Celebrate Your New Brand
- Host an Event: If your rebrand is a big deal, why not throw a launch party or special event to celebrate? It’s a fun way to show off your new brand and engage with your customers.
- Promote Your Rebrand: Get the word out with a PR campaign, social media posts or collaborations with influencers. The more you promote, the more people will notice your fresh new look.
Tip:
Make your rebrand a positive and exciting moment for your business. Showcase the benefits of the new brand and highlight what makes it unique.
